Damage Types and Elements
There are many different types and sources of damage in the Final Fantasy universe. Elemental advantages play a key role in strategy and battle as each has different effects, and can be exploited. The following are the types of damage a player may find and what abilities general deal that type of damage.
Fire: Fire damage is commonly found in fire spells. Black mages have the most access to this element and fire spells burn the land leaving everything as ashes in it's path.
Water: Water damage is commonly found in water based spells. Black mages have the most access to this element. Although water spells deal "water" damage they general act through concussive force when used as an attack.
Ice: Ice damage is commonly found in ice based spells. Black mages have the most access to this element. Ice can damage in many different ways though all of it is considered "ice" damage. Ice can cut, bludgeon, and even damage through pure freezing.
Thunder: Thunder damage is commonly found in thunder based spells. Black mages have the most access to this element. Despite being called thunder, thunder damage is in fact electrical damage and has nothing to do with sound, but the Final Fantasy games have been calling it thunder for years, and that misnomer carries over here.
Earth: Earth damage is commonly found in the quake spells. Geomancers have the most access to this element. Earth damage is similar to ice as it can be used for cutting or concussive attacks depending on the usage. However all these are still considered "Earth" damage is coming from an earth spell.
Wind: Wind damage is commonly found through the Aero spells. White mages have the most access to this element. Wind can be used in a few different ways. Wind can cut or be compacted to act as a concussive force.
Holy: Holy damage is commonly found through the dia spells. White mages and paladins have the most access to this element. Holy is a unique element. It can overwhelm the soul of an opponent causing their soul to depart from their body before its time. It can also burn through holy blinding light.
Dark: Dark damage is commonly found through the dark spells. Dark knights have the most access to this element. Dark damage is corrupting. It causes the body and soul to rot making skin turn black and leaving a target feeling empty.
Bio: Bio damage is commonly found through the bio spells. Black mages have the most access to this element. Depending on the spell bio can be used for poisoning damage or even corrosive damage.
Force: Force damage is a rare damage type reserved mostly for non elemental magic damage. Time mages have the most access to this element with the gravity spells. For the most part force is impact damage done by spells, but can be a stand in for just about anything.
Psychic: A rare damage type. No one job or magic type has full access to psychic damage though it is found in a spell abilities. Psychic damage is done through tampering with the mind. Someone psychically damaged will find their mind foggy, broken. Enough damage can render someone into psychosis unable to live and function in this world.
Bludgeoning: Striking something with physical concussive force. Clubs, hammers, and maces deal this type of damage.
Piercing: Stabbing something. Swords, spears, and bows can deal this type of damage.
Slashing: Anything that cuts many melee weapons deal slashing damage.
