The Mechanical Empire
The Republic of Midgar was formed two hundred years ago, by President Rufus Al Thul I, and a group of scientists who after their city state obtained Al Bhed technology from the neighboring Al Bhed, crushed the opposing force. They then uncovered a seemingly ancient crystal, which constantly drew from the Life-stream. The scientists decided to try merging their technology with this crystal's effects, and thus learned to meld Materia and create Magitek. The Kingdom quickly began to grow, gaining immense military might and becoming the main distributor of technology and Magitek on Terra. Midgar is considered the second strongest nation, only due to the fact that unlike Insomnia they do not have a weapon akin to a force of nature such as the King and his Kingsglaive.

In recent years, Midgar has begun the development of the S.O.L.D.I.E.R program, infusing their soldiers with dangerous levels of Lifestream, or as they call it - Mako Energy in order to make them much stronger. A secret project seems to be in the works, and the higher ups of the military both fear and respect it. Supposedly, it will change Midgar's status permanently when finished.
